Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, is Africa’s largest stand-alone national park and one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wilderness areas. Located in the country’s southern circuit, it is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering an area nearly four times the size of the Serengeti, this vast park is home to some of the largest remaining wildlife populations on the continent. An estimated 30,000 elephants and 200,000 buffalo roam its plains, along with countless zebras, giraffes, hippos, and crocodiles.

Nyerere is one of the best places in Africa to spot the rare and endangered African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf. It’s equally rewarding for bird enthusiasts, with more than 450 species recorded, making it a true birder’s paradise. Its sheer size, diversity of wildlife, and untouched landscapes promise an authentic safari experience for travelers seeking adventure in one of Africa’s last great wildernesses.
