Best Time For Safari in Tanzania

The right time to visit Tanzania really depends on what kind of wildlife experience you want. The dry season from July to September is perfect if you want to see the dramatic Great Migration in the Serengeti, where thousands of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River while facing predators — it’s thrilling but also very crowded with tourists.

If you prefer a more peaceful and lush scenery, the green season from November to March is a wonderful alternative. Even though there may be some rain, this time of year is excellent for birdwatching because migratory birds arrive and the landscape becomes very green and vibrant. It’s also when many animals give birth, especially the wildebeest calves in the Serengeti, making it a wonderful time to see newborns and predator action with fewer crowds around.

Best Time For Safari in Tanzania

Dry Peak Season (July – September)

Best for: Great Migration river crossings & big game viewing

This is the most famous safari season in Tanzania. The weather is dry, so animals gather around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot in open areas. This is when the dramatic Mara River crossing happens in the Serengeti — huge herds of wildebeest and zebras crossing through crocodile-infested waters. It’s one of Africa’s greatest natural events. However, because it’s so spectacular, many tourists visit during these months, so parks and lodges can be busy and more expensive.

Green Season (November – March)

Best for: Birdwatching, lush landscapes & baby animals

This season brings light rains, turning the plains green and beautiful. It’s also the time when migratory birds arrive, making it ideal for bird lovers. In February and March, the wildebeest calving season takes place in southern Serengeti — thousands of babies are born, which also attracts lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. It’s a quieter time with fewer tourists, and the scenery is incredibly photogenic. Perfect for travelers who want a rich, peaceful nature experience.

Shoulder Season (Late May – June & October)

Best for: Good wildlife with fewer crowds

These are “in-between” months when the weather starts drying after the rains or just before the short rains begin. Wildlife is still active, and the vegetation is not too thick, so you can enjoy great game viewing without the huge crowds. It’s also slightly cheaper than peak months. In October, you may still catch parts of the migration in northern Serengeti before the herds move into Kenya.

Long Rainy Season (April – early May)

Best for: Budget travel & stunning green scenery

This is the rainiest time of the year, and some camps and roads may be closed due to muddy conditions. Safaris are still possible, but wildlife is harder to find quickly because animals are more spread out. On the upside, prices are much lower, landscapes are incredibly green, and there are very few tourists. It’s a good option for photographers, honeymooners seeking privacy, and travelers who don’t mind occasional showers in exchange for peace and savings.
