Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” Route, is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike other routes that require camping, Marangu offers the comfort of sleeping huts with shared dormitory-style accommodations. Mandara and Kibo Huts each provide 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut accommodates 120. Climbers are supplied with mattresses and pillows, though a personal sleeping bag remains essential. The huts also feature communal dining areas and basic washroom facilities, with flushing toilets and running water available at lower elevations, and simpler options such as long-drop toilets and bucket water systems at higher camps like Kibo Hut.

Favored for its reputation as the easiest route, Marangu is characterized by a steady incline and a relatively direct approach. However, its shorter itinerary can present acclimatization challenges for some trekkers. Approaching the mountain from the southeast, the route lacks the scenic variety of other trails, as both ascent and descent follow the same path. This design, combined with its popularity, often results in a busier and more congested experience compared to alternative routes.
